Local authorities and requirements

In West Sussex, West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service is the fire and rescue authority, and for most non-domestic premises it is the usual enforcing authority under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005. Your district or borough council may also have requirements, for example through HMO licensing.

Requirements depend on the building, its use, its fire strategy, the fire risk assessment and any conditions that apply. We do not provide fire risk assessments as part of this service and we do not give legal advice.

See our West Sussex area page for our other services locally, or the main fire alarm systems page for the full service.

Fire alarms in West Sussex: common questions

Do you cover the whole of West Sussex?

We work across West Sussex, including the towns listed on this page. If your site is in a town that is not listed, call us and we will confirm whether we can help.

I manage properties in several towns. Can you service them all?

Often, yes. Tell us the addresses, premises types and what systems are installed, and we will let you know what we can take on and how we would approach it.

Where should I start if my fire alarm is old?

Gather what you have: the log book, any certificates, the panel make and model and the latest fire risk assessment. Send it to us with the site postcode and we will advise whether servicing, an upgrade or a replacement design is the right next step.

Do the same standards apply in every building?

No. BS 5839-1 (current edition BS 5839-1:2025) is the code of practice for non-domestic premises and BS 5839-6 is for domestic premises. Which is relevant, and what category of system is needed, depends on the building, its use, the fire strategy and the risk assessment.
