EV Charging — Costs & Pricing

EV Charger Installation Cost UK

A straightforward guide to what EV charger installation actually costs in the UK. No hidden fees, no vague estimates — just honest pricing based on real installations. Most home charger installations fall between £800 and £1,500 depending on your property.

What does EV charger installation cost?

A standard home EV charger installation in the UK typically costs between £800 and £1,500. This includes the charger unit, all cabling, installation by a qualified electrician, testing, certification and handover.

The final price depends on your property. A short cable run from the consumer unit to a wall-mounted charger next to the driveway is at the lower end. A longer run through multiple walls, external groundworks or a consumer unit upgrade pushes the price higher. Every property is different — which is why we survey before we quote.

Commercial and workplace installations vary more widely depending on the number of charge points, load management requirements and any electrical infrastructure upgrades needed.

Price scenarios

£800 – £1,000

Simple installation

Consumer unit is close to the driveway. Short cable run (under 5 metres), no upgrades needed, wall-mounted charger on an external wall. Typical of newer properties with a garage or driveway adjacent to the house.

£1,000 – £1,300

Typical installation

Cable run of 5–15 metres, routing through one or two internal walls or along an external surface. May include minor earthing work or a small consumer unit modification. The most common scenario for UK homes.

£1,300 – £1,500+

Complex installation

Long cable run (15 metres or more), routing through difficult areas, external groundworks or ducting, consumer unit upgrade or new circuit board. Common with older properties, detached homes with set-back driveways, or listed buildings.

What affects EV charger installation cost?

Distance from consumer unit

The further the charger is from your consumer unit, the more cable and labour is required. Every extra metre adds cost.

Cable routing difficulty

Running cable through solid walls, across ceilings or externally along brickwork takes longer than a straight surface run. Difficult routes increase installation time.

Consumer unit upgrades

If your existing consumer unit is full, outdated or does not meet current regulations, it may need upgrading or replacing before a dedicated EV circuit can be added.

Earthing requirements

Older properties sometimes need earthing upgrades to meet current safety standards. This is identified during the site survey and included in the quote if needed.

Groundworks

If the cable needs to cross a driveway, path or garden, ducting and trenching may be required. This adds materials and labour but ensures a safe, permanent installation.

What is included in the price?

  • Smart EV charger unit (7kW, app-enabled, OZEV-compliant)
  • All cabling, fixings and containment
  • Dedicated circuit from your consumer unit
  • Full electrical testing and BS 7671 certification
  • Charger commissioning and app setup
  • User handover — we show you how everything works
  • Electrical Installation Certificate for your records

How to get an accurate quote

Every property is different. Online price calculators give rough estimates but cannot account for cable routing, supply capacity or the condition of your existing electrics. That is why we carry out a free site survey before quoting.

During the survey we check your consumer unit, measure the cable run, assess earthing and identify anything that could affect the installation. You then receive a fixed, itemised quote — no surprises on installation day.

The survey takes around 20–30 minutes. There is no obligation and no pressure. If you decide to go ahead, most installations are completed within two weeks of accepting the quote.
