Solar and battery storage designed around a large home and swimming pool

Omni3 recently completed a solar PV and battery storage installation for a large detached property in Haywards Heath, West Sussex.

This was not a standard residential solar installation. In addition to the normal electrical demand of a substantial family home, the property has a swimming pool with a significant energy requirement for heating and associated equipment. The solar PV, inverter and battery storage system therefore needed to be designed around the property’s actual energy usage, with the aim of maximising the amount of solar energy generated and consumed on site.

16-panel ground-mounted solar array

Rather than installing the solar panels on the main house, Omni3 installed a 16-panel ground-mounted solar PV array within the grounds of the property.

A ground-mounted system can be a practical solution for properties with sufficient land, particularly where the available roof is unsuitable, roof space is limited, or an alternative position provides a better solution for the property. For this installation, the array was positioned separately from the house and pool building, creating a substantial dedicated solar generation system without using the roof of the main property.

Underground ducting from the solar array

Positioning the solar panels away from the buildings meant the cable route formed an important part of the installation. Omni3 excavated a trench between the ground-mounted array and the pool house. Suitable ducting was installed underground and the required solar cabling was run back from the array to the pool-house plant area. This allowed the solar equipment to remain neatly located away from the array while providing a protected cable route between the two parts of the installation.

SolaX inverter and battery storage

The inverter and battery equipment were installed within the pool house. A SolaX inverter and battery storage system was selected and sized around the electrical requirements of the property, including the substantial demand associated with heating and operating the swimming pool.

During periods of solar generation, electricity from the 16-panel array can be used directly within the property. Where generation exceeds immediate demand, available surplus energy can be stored in the battery for use later rather than immediately being exported to the grid. The combination of solar generation and battery storage therefore allows the property to make considerably greater use of the electricity generated on site.

~85%

Solar self-usage

The completed system is achieving approximately 85% self-usage of generated solar energy. For a property with significant electrical demand, maximising self-usage is particularly important.

Designed around the property, not a standard package

This Haywards Heath project demonstrates why solar and battery systems should be designed around the individual property rather than treated as a standard package. Larger homes can have very different consumption profiles from typical residential properties.

Swimming pools, heat pumps, EV chargers, electric heating, outbuildings and other significant electrical loads can all influence the appropriate solar array, inverter and battery configuration. For this project, Omni3 considered:

  • The property's overall electrical demand
  • Swimming-pool heating and associated loads
  • Available space for solar generation
  • The location of the ground-mounted array
  • Underground cable routing
  • Inverter sizing
  • Battery storage
  • The position of the pool-house plant equipment
  • Maximising consumption of solar energy on site

The result is an integrated solar and battery installation designed around the way this particular property actually uses electricity.

Solar panels and battery storage in Haywards Heath

Omni3 designs and installs solar PV and home battery storage systems across Haywards Heath, West Sussex and the surrounding area. Our electrical contracting background also allows us to approach more involved installations where solar generation needs to work alongside significant electrical loads, battery storage, EV charging, outbuildings or other electrical infrastructure.

Every system should start with the property and how its occupants actually use energy.
