The requirement
A UK telecommunications infrastructure company required additional electrical distribution and power infrastructure within a data centre facility. The installation needed to provide suitable three-phase and single-phase power points — including industrial-grade commando sockets — alongside general power distribution and lighting infrastructure.
The project required a proper electrical distribution design from the outset, with a new three-phase distribution board serving the additional circuits. Using armoured cable and metal cable tray for containment was appropriate for the commercial environment and the nature of the installation.
Three-phase distribution board — design and installation
Omni3 designed and installed a new three-phase distribution board to serve the additional circuits within the data centre. The distribution arrangement provided the basis for the new three-phase and single-phase power outlets, ring-main circuit and lighting installation — all fed from one properly designed and installed distribution point.
Armoured cable was used for part of the installation, routed on galvanised metal cable tray where appropriate. This approach is suitable for a commercial environment of this type, providing mechanical protection for the cables, a neat and maintainable installation, and clear separation of the power circuits from other services within the space.
As a commercial electrical installation, the design needed to consider the distribution arrangement, circuit protection and the practical requirements of the equipment and space — rather than simply adding sockets to an existing circuit.
Three-phase and single-phase commando sockets
Two 32A three-phase commando sockets were installed to provide suitable three-phase connection points for equipment within the data centre. Industrial commando sockets provide a robust and rated connection point for equipment with three-phase power requirements — more appropriate for a data centre environment than standard domestic-style wiring.
Four single-phase commando sockets were also installed for equipment requiring single-phase industrial-style connections. The combination of three-phase and single-phase commando outlets, fed from the new distribution board, provides a complete set of industrial power connection points appropriate to the facility.
Ring main and lighting
Omni3 installed a ring-main circuit within the data centre to provide general-purpose power distribution alongside the dedicated commando outlets. The ring main provides standard power distribution points throughout the space — a practical complement to the industrial connection points provided by the commando sockets.
Lighting was also installed within the data centre as part of the overall electrical package, completing the scope of the installation.
